Dr. Sanders has followed a career path that has taken her from a developmental psychology instructor to her present position as Associate Vice President for Academic Support Services at Virginia Tech, Blacksburg. Along the way she has worn such hats as Director of the Boyer Advisory Center and Director of the Office of Minority Education Services at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, and Director of the Center for Academic Enrichment and Excellence at Virginia Tech. At the University of Arkansas she established and directed an academic advising center that was cited as exemplary by the accrediting board. As Director of the Center for Academic Enrichment and Excellence at Virginia Tech, she provided the vision and leadership behind several university-wide retention initiatives that saw student utilization of academic support services increase 19 percent from fall 2001 to fall 2003.

Dr. Sanders’ areas of expertise include academic advising, developmental education, faculty/staff diversity training, the recruitment and retention of minority students, and support services for first-generation/low-income and under-prepared students. In addition, Dr. Sanders has presented at numerous conferences on topics directly related to retention issues including orientation programs for students of color, the development of a comprehensive student services center, and how to encourage persistence as an antidote to students leaving college.
