Dr. Mike Gargano has 27 years of senior management experience in higher education. He has been an administrator at major private and public universities including the University of Hartford, George Washington University, and the University of Rhode Island. He currently serves as the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Campus Life at the University of Massachusetts Amherst (UMass Amherst).
Dr. Gargano’s expertise extends across several areas of university administration including admissions, financial aid, enrollment management, student development, fundraising and institutional advancement, and creating campus environments that focus on student academic achievement.
Under Gargano’s direction, UMass Amherst’s first year student admission applications have increased from 16,400 to 28,400 over the past four years; the acceptance rate has been reduced from 82% to 65%; the average SAT score has improved from 1124 to 1150; and the high school grade point average has steadily climbed from 3.28 to 3.48. The number of first year students enrolled in the Honors College has also increased from 424 to 600.
Focused and intentional efforts in enrollment management, retention, and graduation have resulted in increased revenue for the UMASS campus, revenue that has been successfully directed to new faculty hires, campus construction, classroom renovations, technology enhancements, and student services.
