What is it? Predictive modeling is a sophisticated statistical procedure that identifies the combinations of student characteristics that are most likely to result in desired enrollment behaviors. Unlike some other statistical and qualitative techniques, modeling is able to produce highly detailed, highly accurate information about the probabilities and conditions associated with identified enrollment behaviors. Particularly in the case of adult learners—whose actions tend to be less foreseeable and often defy some of the assumptions typically made about enrollment behaviors—modeling can be an invaluable mechanism in shaping decisions to apply, enroll, and persist. |

Model Types Models can be built at any stage of the enrollment process—e.g., inquiries that lead to application, applicants that lead to enrollment, enrolls that lead to retention--and can be used to develop data-driven financial and personnel initiatives that save institutions both time and money.
